CLASSES FOR ADULTS
Í BEGINNING KNITTING at the HISTORIC 1849 KUHEFUSS HOUSE MUSEUM in CEDARBURG
Saturdays / October 16 (Grafton Yarn Store) October 23 (Kuhefuss House)
10 am – Noon / Ages 10-Adult
Don’t buy those beautiful hats, scarves and sweaters! Learn how easy it is to make them yourself by mastering the basics of knitting with teacher Claudette Lee. Anyone age 10 and over can learn the six easy steps in just two classes and then set out on a lifetime of knitting fun. Class 1 will be held at the Grafton Yarn Store (1300 14th Avenue) to acquaint students with all of the tools and how to make correct yarn choices from the thousands available. Class 2 will be held in the cozy surroundings of Cedarburg’s own 1849 Kuhefuss House Museum. Space is very limited so register early for this unique opportunity. THE JOY OF PHOTOGRAPHY

Back by request from former students, well-known photographer John Alley will share even more of his expertise in the world of photography. Learn to critique good and bad photos. Explore the art of composition and the joy of picture-taking during classes 1, 3 and 4 and experience a special photographic opportunity for class 2. $60 (members) $70 (non-members) Students need to bring a camera.

CLAY SAMPLER WORKSHOP - ALL SKILL LEVELS
Wednesdays/October 13, 20, November 3 / 7-9 pm
Discover the creative and relaxing process of making pottery with artist Corky Jon. Alternating use of the potter’s wheel and techniques of hand-building basics, Corky will introduce new techniques and provide the opportunity to produce several types of pieces during the class. Try clay work basics for the first time and develop your skills in a fun, open atmosphere with plenty of hands-on assistance. Additional open work sessions may be offered upon mutual agreement, with an additional fee. $55 (members) $60 (non-members)Includes supplies and clay for class work.

Í MOSAIC TILE MIRROR WORKSHOP

Join artist Terri White for her popular mosaic tile class featuring a framed mirror as the finished project. Learn the basics of mosaic work from start to finish in this class for all skill levels. $35 (members) $40 (non-members) Supply list available upon registration.

WOODCARVING FOR BEGINNERS
Thursdays / October 7, 14, 21, 28 / 7-9 pm
The Cedarburg Cultural Center is pleased to announce that national award-winning woodcarving artist; Alan Remmel will be sharing his talent and experience with interested carvers of all skill levels this fall and winter. Alan will explain the basics of equipment and tools and then expertly guide students through the entire process of carving a one-quarter size decoy or shorebird during this first series of classes. Patternmaking, carving and finished painting will all be covered in this comprehensive class. Each student will receive a packet of information on choosing tools, locating supplies, templates for carving and detailed information on finishing techniques of master carvers. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to enjoy the art of woodcarving. $70 (members) $80 (non-members) A supply fee of $25 for a set of tools and materials will be payable to Alan on the night of the first class.
COLLAGE, PRINTMAKING AND BOOK ARTS

EXPLORING RELIEF PRINTING: COLLAGRAPH

In this class you will explore the relief-style printmaking technique of collagraph with artist Jody Dunphy. Collagraph is a new and exciting printmaking process that is easy for beginners yet offers a fresh approach for those with experience in printmaking. A wide range of materials and textured surfaces can be used in the process creating rich, organic textures and line characteristic of the collagraph print. This class is especially wonderful for painters or drawers who want to experiment with printmaking. $55 (members) $60 (non-members)

CONSTRUCT / DECONSTRUCT / RECONSTRUCT!!
Saturdays / October 2 and 9 / 1-3 pm / Ages 13 - Adult
What is this class all about anyway?? Led by Jod Dunphy, it’s a truly unique and liberating way to create art! First, students will create a 2-D work of art on heavy paper, deconstructing it in the next step and reconstructing the piece back again into a 3-D hard-cover book that can magically fold into several different configurations. Tired of it looking that way or need to move it onto a new shelf? Then just fold it into another one of the multitude of different configurations for a whole new view of your work. It’s an addicting interactive piece of ever-changing art!! $35 (members) $40 (non-members)
BOOKSCAPES

If you enjoy sketching or painting landscapes, this class is perfect for you! First, students will create a panoramic folding book in class with artist Jody Dunphy and then take it outside to capture the beauty of the local landscape in the media of their choice. This technique adds an exciting dimension to landscape art and is a great way to display and enjoy the fall colors.

PORTFOLIO BOOKS
Wednesdays / November 10 and 17 / 6:30-9:30 pm / Ages 16-Adult
In this class you will create a series of 2-D art pieces and then learn how to create different portfolio structures in which to house the series. The portfolio book cover is a versatile structure that is beautiful and functional and can be used as a distinctive way to present and store paper, art, photos, or other 2-D keepsakes. INTRODUCTION TO POETRY
Tuesdays / October 12, 19, 26 and November 2 / 7-9 pm
This introductory course in poetry, with instructor Dan Lanzdorf, is geared for the beginner to intermediate level. The course consists of four two-hour sessions with emphasis on concepts of poetry, creative writing, and performance. You will explore the power of metaphor, oral tradition, feelings and images triggered by sensory perception and the difference between story-telling and the circular nature of lyrical poetry. Respectful critique will be provided for students' work. Whether or not you are experienced or have never written a poem in your life, expect to be challenged in a fun-filled atmosphere as you create your own poetry and interact with other students. $60 (members) $70 (non-members) Students need to bring a pen notebook.
GLASS ART

GLASS ART FOR BEGINNERS - PART 1
Tuesdays / September 28 and October 5 / 7-9 pm
If you’ve ever admired colorful glass art objects, then this is the class for you. Artist Jan Stensby will take you on a unique adventure into the world of “slumping” glass in the first part of her series. Learn how to cut, shape and polish flat glass pieces before slumping over an object in a kiln to achieve its final shape. It is a fascinating form of artwork which keeps students guessing right up until the end when the kiln door is opened! Price includes firing of two finished pieces. Arrangements can be made to finish additional pieces. $30 (members) $35 (non-members) Supply list will be furnished upon registration.

GLASS ART FOR BEGINNERS – PART 2

GLASS ART - PART 3 – ADVANCED TECHNIQUES

Session three in the glass art series is for students to learn how to take their class projects to the next level. Students who have completed either part one or two of the series may bring their pieces back to learn the next steps in embellishing glass art with paint and more. Fee: $30 (members) $35 (non-members)

Í FUSED GLASS & STERLING SILVER JEWELRY WORKSHOP
Thursdays / November 4 and 11 / 7-9 pm
Jan Stensby is back for a workshop in fused glass art, but this time she’s brought friend and teacher Ginny Kwech to take students in a new direction with their finished fused glass pieces. Class 1 will focus on creating a fused glass pendant or large bead with Jan guiding students through the entire process from start to finish. Class 2 will feature Ginny in a jewelry-making session to change the glass piece into a stunning finished sterling silver bracelet or pendant featuring her creative wire-wrapping techniques. Stop by to see the sample pieces at the Center. $30 (members) $35 (non-members) Additional sterling silver supply fee payable upon choice of finished piece.

WATERCOLOR WITH ALICE STRUCK

Learn watercolor painting from award-winning artist Alice Struck. A longtime favorite watercolorist, Alice will teach classes which include instruction in composition, color handling, layout and specialized watercolor techniques. BEYOND STICK PEOPLE

If you’ve ever said, “I wish I could draw that …,” then this is the class for you! Award-winning artist Claudette Lee is back for this “no pressure” exploration of beginning drawing with charcoal, pencil and pastels. Learn the basics of perspective, layout, shading and much more in this class to get you started in the world of 2-D art. $75 (members) $80 (non-members) includes use of drawing supplies. Students must bring sketchbook.

Í FLOORCLOTH PAINTING WORKSHOP

Learn the latest methods of painting a floorcloth to match your décor with artist Claudette Lee. Currently one of the hottest decorating alternatives to area rugs, floorcloth painting is enjoying a revival in today’s interior decorating schemes. Fee includes 3’ x 5’ pre-primed canvas to work on in class. Students are encouraged to bring stencils, sponges and other materials to customize their works to match décor. $35 (members) $40 (non-members) Supply list available.

TEACHERS CONVENTION - ART CAMP

Looking for something to do while the teacher is away?? Then bring some friends and join artist Jody Dunphy for a fun-filled two-day art camp here at the Cultural Center.

STORYBOOKS AND FAIRYTALES CLASS is an engaging storybook project using creative writing skills and bookmaking and illustrating techniques. Jody will bring out creative writing skills in each student and then help them create a visual work of art, blending together a keepsake treasure of a child’s imagination. The class is fun and mentally stimulating.

TREASURE BOXES class, a fun and creative way for kids to store trinkets, encase that special holiday gift or make a colorful work of art. Students will create a collection of treasure boxes from heavy paper and decorate them, inside and out, using a variety of trinkets, fabrics, and two-dimensional media including crayons, watercolor, markers and colored pencils. Templates are provided so that you can add to your collection at home! $30 (members) $35 (non-members)

CLAYCAMP-DINNERWARE WORKSHOP FOR KIDS
Saturdays / October 16, 23 and November 6 / 10-11 am / Ages 8 -12
Calling all kids 8–12! Come create your very own ceramic place setting with artist Corky Jon. Learn how to take raw clay and form it into your own plate, bowl and mug using the slab and coil method to shape them. Then Corky will teach kids the techniques of glazing and firing the finished pieces to complete the basics of pottery work. The finished product is a functional 3-piece set of dinnerware that can be used and cherished for years. $45 (members) $50 (non-members) includes supplies.
MUSIC FOR CHILDREN
MUSIC FOR TOTS (and Parents, too!!)

The only Milwaukee area offering of this world renowned program! The Silver Lake College Music for Tots Program is a ten-week session of classes for tots, from birth through age five. Each class is limited to 8 children with ages ranging less than one year wherever possible. For children up to 3 years of age, classes in the Music for Tots Program meet one-half hour each week for ten weeks with their parents. Older children function independently in class with the teacher while parents observe in the classroom. Half-hour classes.
Birth-2 year olds / $85 for the ten-week session

Since it is well known that children, even from infancy, consistently respond to music physically and with a sense of well-being, and since research now documents the enhancement that music can make in the physical, emotional, and intellectual development of children, the purpose of these classes is to provide a wide repertoire of age appropriate musical activities: songs, rhymes, movement and playing of simple instruments. Parents attending these classes learn the songs and activities and can therefore encourage and support their child in these activities at home.

PAPER MACHÉ TURKEY CENTERPIECE

FUSED GLASS FOR KIDS!

Teacher Jan Stensby developed this special glass art class just for students ages 8 and over to introduce them to the fascinating world of fusing glass. No glass cutting will be necessary in this class, just some creativity in using glass embellishing techniques before the ornament is fired in the kiln. Don’t miss this unique opportunity for kids to explore a new medium! $15 (members) $20 (non-members)

STAFF
John Alley is known worldwide for his award-winning photographic journalism and PBS documentaries of his travels on five continents including the South Pole. He has headed the photography departments of the University of Michigan and the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and has been instrumental in implementing a system for preservation of UWM’s photographic archives.
Jody Dunphy is a 2002 graduate of MIAD and brings a fresh new perspective to the Cultural Center teaching staff. She is considered one of Milwaukee’s most notable emerging printmakers and her exciting and innovative projects in screen printing and book arts have been well received during her recent teaching jobs at Taft High School in Lincoln City, Oregon, the Betty Brinn Museum in Milwaukee and the Sitka Center of Art and Ecology in Otis, Oregon.
Corky Jon has been an artist and teacher for 28 years in several communities across the country. She was instrumental in founding the St. Peters Community Art Center in St. Louis, Missouri and is currently the President of the Cedarburg Artist Guild. Her pottery and clay sculptures have won numerous awards around the nation over the past several decades

Dan Lanzdorf is an accomplished poet and teacher who has performed his poetry throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. He has studied the art form extensively with instructors such as Laurel Mills in Wisconsin and Timothy Liu at the Iowa summer workshop. Dan has taught similar classes in Rochester, Minnesota and was chosen by the Minnesota Society of Poets to critique work at their annual convention in 2002. Dan and his wife, Laurie, have just moved here after he retired as president of the McNeilus Companies. He is now free to pursue his many passions which include sailing, opera and poetry.
Claudette Lee is an award-winning artist and member of the Cedarburg Artist Guild, whose work appears in the prestigious Milwaukee Art Museum Store. Her most recent award was in the 2003 Strawberry Festival Plein Air Painting Competition. Claudette has a Master’s Degree in Education and has taught adult and children’s classes for the arts program for Milwaukee’s former Palette Shop.

Alan Remmel has joined the staff of the Cedarburg Cultural Center Arts Education Program with a long list of awards and honors, including past featured artist of the Channel 10/36 Auction. His meticulous attention to detail and authenticity in decoy carving has also gained him numerous national awards and his work resides in private collections throughout the country. Alan also spent a number of years working with his father in the study and execution of totem pole art of the Northwest Indians.

Jan Stensby is an award-winning glass artist whose work can be seen in galleries throughout southeastern Wisconsin. Jan continues to challenge herself and other glass artists by doing the seemingly impossible with glass art. Her curiosity continues to fuel some of her more unusual techniques, including the use of metal shavings and vibrant paints that she adds to the pieces before firing. The unique finished products continue to amaze her every time she opens the kiln door.

Carol Storck is a certified music teacher for the State of Wisconsin. She holds a Bachelor of Music degree in choral and general music education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received a Kodaly Certificate and Masters of Education with Kodaly emphasis from Silver Lake College, Manitowoc, WI. Carol has taught music in the Grafton and West Bend School Districts, for the Milwaukee Children’s Choir and for St. Francis Borgia School in Cedarburg.

Alice Struck–Alice is a member of the Wisconsin Watercolor Society, Wauwatosa Art League and Cedarburg Artist Guild, with over 18 years of experience including appearances as a presenter at the AATA Conference in St. Louis, Missouri, a professor at Marion College in Fond du Lac and the recipient of numerous awards including two special honors at the prestigious Watercolor Wisconsin.
